Todd Humphreys, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, deployed an experimental GPS receiver on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2017 to study the Earth's atmosphere and ionosphere. Humphreys and his team discovered that they could use the receiver to geolocate and characterize illegal jamming and spoofing signals by recording raw signal data and using Doppler-based methods. The experiment attracted the attention of satellite operators for its potential military and commercial applications.
