Voices From Space
Podcast Episode 50: May 29, 2019
Stewart Sanders, EVP, Technology and O3b mPOWER Program Manager, SES
Listen to Stewart Sanders discuss a satellite constellation debuting in MEO based on a fully digitized payload that can give lots of flexibility, especially for manipulating beam-forming phased arrays. Stewart talks about why operating in MEO versus GEO makes sense (hint, for data services where low latency is a major factor, MEO is a better choice.) Stewart also discusses the nature of phased array technology to generate anywhere from one to a very large number of individual beams, as well as a description of how each beam can be weighted, or shaped to any configuration. Satellite networks are becoming more sophisticated with inherent intelligence allowing them to orchestrate solutions based on data needs and the use of flexible gateways. With the added assistance of a system dynamic resource manager (SDRM), the next generation of satellite networking capabilities is on their way to a market near you.
